There’s one question that never fails to make me smile:
“Where did you get that?”
It’s simple. It’s sincere. And it always hits.
Whether it’s said with wide eyes in the bathroom mirror line, casually messaged on Instagram, or asked mid-conversation at brunch, that question means someone noticed. Not just your clothes—but your choices. Your eye. Your energy. Your ability to put something together in a way that stopped them in their tracks.
Fashion can feel loud sometimes. We dress to express, to stand out, to stand taller. And yet, when someone singles out a detail—a jacket, a bag, a lip color—and wants to know the story behind it, something incredibly validating happens. You realize: someone saw it. And they liked it enough to ask.
It’s not just about the thing you’re wearing. It’s about the fact that you wore it well.
I’ve had strangers ask me where I got my jacket and then end up following me on Instagram. I’ve had someone ask about my shoes, and we talked about fashion internships for 30 minutes. “Where did you get that?” has turned into conversations, connections, collaborations—and more than once, opportunities.
Because that question does more than compliment your taste. It acknowledges your presence. And when you love fashion the way I do, being acknowledged for it feels like someone speaking your language.
And of course, it’s not always easy to answer. Sometimes the piece is vintage. Or thrifted. Or passed down from someone meaningful. Sometimes you don’t even remember where you got it—just that it made you feel right. That’s when the conversation deepens. Because now it’s not just about shopping—it’s about story. About memory. About identity.
Those are the conversations I live for.
And honestly, I’ve made a point to ask the question more myself. Not just because I want to know where someone found that perfect pair of sunglasses—but because I know how good it feels to be asked. We don’t need to wait for someone to go viral or show up on a red carpet to give fashion the praise it deserves. If someone looks amazing on your commute, tell them. If their pants made your whole day better, say something. I promise you—it’ll mean more than you think.
So yes, I’ll keep answering the question. “Where did I get this?”
Let me tell you. And then let’s talk about why I picked it, what it reminds me of, how it makes me feel. Because those are the moments where fashion stops being just fabric—and becomes something much more personal. You got this. <3
